Tree Stump Removal Cost 2023

Updated: Mar 18, 2023

As a rough guide, our tree stump removal cost tends to be between £125-£450 depending on the size of the stump, this includes waste removal. We don't necessarily charge per stump either, for example several small diameter stumps might still cost £125 to grind. There are a couple of factors that can affect the stump grinding cost.

  • Diameter of the stump - as you might expect, the larger the stump, the higher the price

  • Location of the stump - is it in a nice open, easy to access area, or is it in the back garden, up some stairs against a fence? This will affect how long the job takes and therefore the price.

  • Is there other tree work being carried out at the same time? If so, the cost of grinding a stump will likely be much cheaper if done at the same time, rather than as a separate job at a later date.

Of course, the stump removal cost above assumes you have chosen to go down the route of having a professional do the stump grinding for you. You might be considering stump grinder hire and doing it yourself

Stump Grinder Hire Cost

Stump grinder hire might appear to save you some money, however it's important to be aware of a few key things before you make your decision. For example, the cheapest advertised price of around £95+VAT for a one day stump grinder hire doesn't include mandatory add on fees for petrol and blade wear and tear, which can add up to £25+VAT. It's also important to consider the size of the stump you're trying to remove as stump grinder rental machines tend to be 13hp, which work best on small to medium-sized stumps, not larger ones. Additionally, delivery isn't usually included, so that could add an extra £30+VAT to the total cost, unless you pick up and return the machine yourself before the shop closes. Plus, you might need to purchase a damage waiver as well. All in all, a one day rental for the smallest machine can cost between £160-£200, depending on delivery, and keep in mind that you'll still need to grind the stump yourself.
